His wife Patricia died of cancer in 1983 leaving him two young children to raise. Richie re-married Deborah Manseau in 1985. He worked as a parts manager at several auto dealerships until he suffered a stroke in 1987 which left him paralyzed on his left side. He was only 38 years old. Deborah and Richie divorced in 1994. In 2003 Richie married Barbara Ann Domenk who survives him.
