George Zimmer, Jr. (1926 – 2006)

George A. Zimmer Jr. age 80, a resident of Kenosha, died Saturday August 12, 2006 at Geneva Manor in Lake Geneva.

George was the 7th son born to George and Ida Belle (Dumas) Zimmer. He was born on May 28, 1926 in Marshfield WI. Five of the seven sons would serve in the military during Word War II.

George attended schools in Marshfield WI and graduated from Marshfield High School in 1944. Two days after graduating from high school he was taken into the US Navy.

While in the Navy and stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station he sang in the Blue Jackets Choir. He served in the navy from 1944-1946. He then would attend the UW Madison and on September 25, 1948 he married Ruth Mueller. She preceded him in death in July 2006. Together they had 3 sons, Jerry, George III, and Mark.

From 1948 to 1950 he was a salesman for Oscar Mayer. From 1950-1955 he sold for National Biscuit Co.

In 1956 he moved to Kenosha and was with the Kenosha Health Dept. for 28 years retiring in 1988.

He was past president of WI Sanitation Officials Association. With a federal grant, he was able to set up the 1st hazardous waste disposal program in Kenosha. He was also a certified soil tester for Wisconsin. He was appointed by the State of WI Dept. of Health and Human Services to be a member of the WI Sanitarians Examining Council. He was a member of the Board of Housing Appeals and the Board of Zoning Appeals. He also served as secretary of the Environmental Control Commission. He was also appointed by the State of WI to a committee to revise the WI Restaurant Code. He also served as a past president of the City of Kenosha Employers Credit Union.

He had a love of music and sang with the Snap-On Chorus for 17 years. He was a member of St. Mary?s Lutheran Church and also sang in the church choir.

His greatest love was his immediate family, his grandchildren and his great granddaughter.

He is survived by two sons; George A. (Lynette) Zimmer III of Burlington; Mark (Loretta) Zimmer of Jacksonville Ark., six grandchildren; Sara Zimmer, Kristin Kennedy, Jeff Zimmer, Julie Zimmer, Morgan Zimmer, Mason Zimmer, and great grand daughter, Alexis Kennedy, three brothers Lloyd, Lowel (Susie) and Russell.

He was preceded is death by his parents, his wife, one son; Jerry and three brothers Harold, Robert and Roger.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday August 15, 2006 at 11:00AM at St. Mary?s Lutheran Church in Kenosha. (2001-80th St.) Visitation will be on Tuesday at the church from 9:00AM until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to St. Mary?s Lutheran Church or the Kenosha Humane Society would be appreciated.

Burial will take place at Southern WI Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
